Automod (AutoModerator) is Reddit's built-in, rule-based moderation bot that every subreddit can configure to automatically remove, filter, flag, or reply to posts and comments matching defined conditions, keywords, links, account age, or karma thresholds.
Why it matters
Automod is the invisible wall most marketers hit first. A post can be removed the instant it's submitted, often with no notification, because the account is too new, has too little karma, or includes a domain on the subreddit's blocklist. Many founders conclude "Reddit doesn't work" when in reality their content was never visible to anyone. Understanding Automod is the difference between posting into a void and actually reaching a community, which is critical when Reddit threads increasingly feed AI citations.
How to use it
- After posting, open the thread in a logged-out or incognito window; if it's invisible, Automod likely removed it.
- Warm accounts up before posting links: real comment history, account age, and karma clear most thresholds (see Reddit account warmup).
- If a legitimate post gets removed, message the mods politely and ask what rule it tripped, many will approve it manually.
