AI Search is any search experience where a large language model reads web sources and synthesizes a direct answer, instead of returning a ranked list of links. ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot are all AI search surfaces.
Why it matters
AI search compresses the funnel: instead of ten blue links, the user sees one answer that names two or three brands. If your SaaS isn't in that answer, you're invisible to that buyer. And the sources these engines lean on are different from classic SEO winners, Reddit threads, review sites, and comparison listicles get cited constantly (Reddit's licensing deals with Google and OpenAI made it one of the most-cited domains in AI answers). Ranking #4 on Google used to get you traffic; being absent from the synthesized answer gets you nothing.
How to use it
- Track which answer engines mention you for your money prompts ("best X for Y") and measure your citation rate over time.
- Audit the sources AI engines actually cite for those prompts, then earn presence on them, especially Reddit threads and listicles.
- Treat AI search as its own channel with its own playbook, not a side effect of SEO. Start with generative engine optimization.
