Citation Rate is the percentage of AI-generated answers, across a defined set of relevant prompts, that mention or cite your brand or domain. It's the core KPI of AI visibility work.

Why it matters

You can't improve what you don't measure, and AI search has no Search Console equivalent. Citation rate gives GEO the same role rankings play in SEO: a trackable number that tells you whether your seeding and content work is actually moving. It also exposes engine-by-engine differences, a brand can appear in most Perplexity answers for its category yet be absent from ChatGPT, because each engine retrieves from different sources. Without a citation rate baseline, founders judge AI visibility by anecdote ("I asked ChatGPT once and we showed up"), which is noisy and misleading since LLM outputs vary between runs.

How to use it

  • Build a prompt set of 20-50 buyer questions ("best X for Y", "X vs Z", "alternatives to Z") and run them on each engine monthly, see prompt tracking.
  • Track citation rate per engine and per prompt category; compare against competitors to get your share of model voice.
  • When citation rate is low for a prompt, inspect which sources the engine cited instead, that's your seeding target list.
