PerplexityBot is Perplexity AI's web crawler, identified by the user-agent PerplexityBot, that indexes public web pages so Perplexity can retrieve and cite them as sources in its answers.

Why it matters

Perplexity is a citation-first answer engine: every answer links its sources prominently, so being indexable directly translates into visible brand mentions and referral clicks. Perplexity also leans heavily on community sources, Reddit threads are among the most cited domains in AI answers, which is why a SaaS mentioned positively in relevant subreddits often shows up in Perplexity results before its own blog does. If PerplexityBot can't crawl you, your only path into those answers is third-party coverage you don't control.

How to use it

  • Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and check that bot-protection layers (Cloudflare and similar) aren't blocking it upstream of your rules.
  • Structure key pages answer-first, short, quotable definitions and comparisons, since Perplexity cites passages, not whole sites (see Perplexity citations).
  • Run your core buying queries in Perplexity monthly and log which domains get cited; if Reddit threads outrank your site, invest in those threads too.
