Brand Mention Gap is the set of relevant buyer prompts where AI engines name your competitors but not you. It's the difference between where you should appear in AI answers and where you actually do.
Why it matters
Every gap is a purchase conversation happening without you. When a founder asks ChatGPT "best [your category] for startups" and gets three competitor names back, that deal is effectively lost before you knew it existed. Mention gaps are also the most actionable finding in GEO: unlike vague "improve authority" advice, a gap points to specific prompts, specific engines, and, once you inspect the cited sources, specific pages where a mention of your product is missing. Closing gaps is usually cheaper than defending prompts you already win.
How to use it
- Run prompt tracking across your buyer prompts and flag every prompt where a competitor appears and you don't.
- For each gap, open the answer's cited sources, typically Reddit threads and listicles, and note which ones omit you. That becomes your source gap analysis.
- Prioritize gaps on high-intent prompts ("best", "vs", "alternatives") first; they map most directly to revenue. The ChatGPT recommendation playbook walks through closing them.
